Google Is Using Page Load Algorithm – Beware!
There’s been a lot of talk lately about load times and their effects on your Google page ranking. It’s true, Google now takes load times into account, and if your site takes too long to load, you could take a hit to your PR. But loading speed isn’t the end-all be-all of PR. SEO professionals know that Google takes many factors into account as part of your PR — sometimes up to 200 different factors! Don’t make changes that would reduce your site’s quality or effectiveness just to get load times down a little.
Google itself has been telling owners not to sacrifice quality, relevant material just to speed up loading. Nevertheless, there are some things you can do to make your site load faster, without taking such drastic measures. The first thing to do is to check on whether your CMS, or your site’s template or theme, is slowing you down.
If you’re like a lot of site owners, you put a ton of effort into your site’s content management system and its design, but you were probably looking at layout, design, and other aspects of the user’s experience. That’s a little like buying a car based on the paint job, without ever looking under the hood. If there are large background images or poorly-written code in your backend, you may be able to do a lot more to make your site fast.
First, consider cutting out unnecessary plugins, widgets, and embedded apps. Even a few WordPress plugins can substantially slow down a site. Next, open your website images in an image editor and use the “save for web” option. This will cut out data that your readers weren’t going to benefit from anyway, because the picture they’re seeing is small enough that super-high resolution isn’t required.
Some blog software has lots of sexy features, but the result of turning them all on isn’t sexy at all — drastically slower loading times. This is actually true for any CMS software: the more data you force users to load before they’re able to see your site, the greater chance you stand of losing users, or making them angry.
